After 15 years, GeoCities closed their doors today. There are a lot of mixed feelings about this closure. Some happy, some sad.

Okay despite all the joking, I’m kind of sad. My first website ever was on GeoCitites, and I met a lot of really cool moms on the site. Some embraced the technology and have super cool websites or development jobs now, and some just remained really cool moms with super kick ass sexy websites.
Which ever path your chose for your life, I am so happy and grateful to have you in my online world. GeoCities…you changed lives forever! Thanks for the 15!

So true, Julie! I learned HTML as a college freshman (1994) and had to move my site from the college server and found GeoCities. I was in the Broadway neighborhood — and made my site out of FRAMES.
Thanks for the memories…

Oh, that is truly the passing of a lost age. I had no idea you were so involved. Glad you helped kids stay safe, though! Sorry for your loss. ![]()

I was very sad about Geocities closing until I realized something… my old Geocities site is still up and running. Even today, a day after it’s supposed to be gone. They can’t even shut down correctly! What a mess they are. I love them for it.
Also, I should point out that crappy Youtube movies made in Windows Movie Maker are like the Geocities of today.
I didn’t know you did all of that at Geocities. Wow.
I had a site there for a short while but I lost track of it (and forgot my login after a while).
What’s strange is that I was updating my oldest website (own domain site started in 1995) over the weekend and I had all these links to various Geocities websites. It felt bad having to delete them since many of them were run by some of my first friends on the web.

My first website was on Geo cities. I was about 15 and I thought having all of those games was so cool. I got all of my friends to check it out and loved that I got about 10 visits a day.

I didn’t know you did all that at Geocities. I had my first website there! I can’t even remember the name of it. I hate change. So sad to see it go.
Awww… My Very Own Mail started on Geocities…
So sad to see it go!!
Very cool that you were so involved with it all like you were! That’s awesome!
SNIFF SNIFF they were my first family website ever!!! they hosted the ultrasound pics of my baby and our first dog as a family. oh how i will miss you geocities!! i nearly cried when i found out they were going.
I built my first site on Geocities too. I took a screen shot (of my over 10 year old site) a few days ago and meant to post a tearful goodbye but didn’t get around to it yet. Your post says it all though… and I totally remember Enchanted Forest. Bet our paths crossed and we never even knew it!

Don’t be sad and bye bye Geocities.
I remember Geocities. I had a site there too but then I discovered Blogger and never really had a chance to put a hold there. Sad to hear they have shut down.

Funny how many of us built our first sites on geocities and then to see what we are doing today. Geocities will be missed, it was an iconic place along the web path
I would love to see someone research and write an article “Geocities Community Leaders: Where are they now?” I’ll do it myself if I can’t find anyone else to do it. I was never a community leader, but I loved that program, the people in it, and their community centers. I miss them all very much, and I would love to have news about them and maybe get some of them back in my life.
Ahh Geocities, talk about memories! I can’t believe they tanked, then again now that we all have blogs hardly anyone was using them anymore.

My first site was on Geocities as well. I still remember getting so excited when my “hit counter” (i’m sure you remember those) at the bottom starting going way up! Turns out my little site had become a “featured site” in my neighbourhood! Not sure why as there wasn’t a lot there, but I still remember the thrill, and it got me hooked one web design!
