Whenever you go out to eat you form some type of opinion of the restaurant, the food, the service, etc. If you’ve got a blog you will usually write about this visit soon after arriving home. If you’re on Facebook you probably upload a picture of your food before you even try it, and you will probably Twitter about where you are and how good, or bad, your experience is going. Restaurants need to be on their A game now that all these social media outlets are at their patrons fingertips. If your food or service sucks, a million people will know about it within minutes.
With that said, the experience you have while dining out can be a direct result of how much of a dick you are to your server. No matter how hard you to try to blame them or the restaurant, if you are a dick, you will get dick service. As you sow, so shall you reap, is the idiom that comes to mind here. I think you get the idea. I have a simple rule while dining out. Be nice to my server, and I will get the service I expect. Seriously people, it’s not that hard. Or is it?
Apparently it’s pretty damn hard for some people, and the servers are fighting back. If you are a crappy customer, social media will turn around and bite you on the ass as well. So go ahead and Twitter that your server is horrible, and she/he will come back and write about you on Waiting In Vegas. I’m willing to bet that you were probably a jerk to her/him in the first place anyway.
Do you recognize yourself or anyone you know in his/her stories? Think about it the next time you are an asshole to your server. You just might be sitting in his/her restaurant and your sorry ass will be on his/her blog the next day.
Me and @cgbj went out for pizza on Monday and we ended up with like three different waiters/waitresses serving us – they were so helpful!
We also went out today with our youth group for pizza and the waitress was okay but her attitude was a little hostile – it was okay we could get over it and it didn’t spoil our meal which was good. The worst server I’ve had was when I went out for my birthday last year – so much that we complained – I don’t complain very often because I used to be a waitress so i know how stressful it can be.

Thank you so much for this post! I love that site. I have been a fan of a site called waiterrant.com where some waiter in New York has been writing about customers, managers, co-workers and everything that comes with it. He’s been doing it for years. He wrote a book about it as well. If you check out his site, for the best stuff, look back 1-2 years. Very entertaining!

You know what, when I was a server and people were rude ot me, then yes I was jsut as rude back haha. However as a customer I am ALWAYS very nice to any kind of worker I come across. However that been said, if I still get shite service in reply I will get angry and turn ugly on them. I hate when you get grumpy customer service when the customer is being so polite. I have a go at people when I see elderly being all nice and them just being complete arswipes to the poor old souls. I HATE it!!

THANK YOU! Such a relative post for me personally…. I have an Aunt who I absolutely hate dining with because she argues as we are seated by the host and continues from there. I find myself being overly nice to the staff and polite when out with her.

People that are rude to their servers eat a lot of spit (and other things to gross to mention)!

I would never ever be rude to my server, I see some people and how they act and I just want to smack them from the way they talk to them. You have no right to be rude just because you are a paying customer but some people just feel the entitlement to act how they want.

It is simple amazing and discouraging to me when I go out to see those being waited upon acting like the king or queen of “dickland.” It’s almost embarrassing and I don’t even know them. You’d have to have the patience of a saint to be the waitperson!

It is amazing how rude people can be to waitstaff who work for barely anything but tips. Put yourself in their shoes. Loved the blog.

HaHa…that was funny. “If you were a dick, you probably got dick service”!! Yes, I was a waitress years ago and it’s true that people can really be mean and disrespectful. I always am polite, patient and give a great tip- even if they are not very good. I know it’s hard!

I do a lot of blogging for my site, because it’s primarily a service for my fellow Central Floridians. I don’t expect too much when it comes to eating out, but you can be assured I most definitely share both good and bad experiences!

Was never a waitress, but did food demo for a while at Costco. People can be awful. Some people come there for the samples and call it lunch, by the time they have made the rounds!

We are always kind to those who serve us. My husband worked several years in pizza. We usually get good service but sometimes you just get someone who doesn’t give a care. But that’s usually not the case. Ironically we have gotten bad service lately at pizza establishments.

You’re so right! And no, it’s not hard to be nice to your server. Most of them put on a smile and greet you regardless of how other customers have treated them. It’s a breath of fresh air when customers are respectable.

Actually you should never be rude to your server…just bite your tongue. They are, after all, serving you food that you will eat and if you anger them who knows what the bold and daring ones may do to your meal. Yikes, maybe I’ve watched to many silly movie but nonetheless we should always be respectful to people.

I have to admitt I am a coward when it come to complaining, If the service is bad I would not want to upset the server (just in case)I would simply not go there again and would warn everyone else from going.
