With the rising cost of almost everything these days, I’m always on the lookout for ways to scale back on our budget. The one thing that we had to give up on our last budget update was our book purchases. Michael and I use to spend about $200 a month at the book store. I loved our monthly visits where we’d spend hours looking through books and sharing titles with each other. You’d often hear me screaming across the store, “Hey baby, come look at this book!”

Following on the heels of the successful movie DVD rental company Netflix, comes
BookSwim
. You rent books, take all the time you need to read them, send them back and they ship you more books.

BookSwim
Features:

  • Free shipping both ways
  • Rentals include college textbooks along with bestselling novels
  • Keep the books you love with their book purchasing system
  • Automatic billing each month
  • No contracts – you can cancel at anytime
  • No due dates, no late fees
  • Unlimited rentals per month

BookSwim
Membership Plans:

  • Devout Reader – 11 books – $19.93
  • Avid Reader – 7 books – $14.94
  • Casual Reader – 5 books – $12.45
  • Light Reader – 3 books – $9.95

BookSwim
Current Promotion:

  • 50% off the monthly membership price of $19.93. Just $9.95 to sign up now!

When I first came across this service I thought, why not just go to the library? Well it’s basically the same reason you don’t want to go to the movie rental store. There are no late fees, BookSwim never closes, no waiting list for popular titles, and they come directly to your house! Seems pretty nifty to me!

Check out BookSwim and tell me what you think.

I’m still liking the library, except for that pesky trip to the library to pick up what’s come in for me, and returning what’s due.

How do you have time to read? I have so many books to catch up on but never seem to get around to them…

This is cool! With my son heading into college next year, maybe RENTING the books will work. Definitely bookmarking! Thanks Jules!

Heather – I read almost every day, and it’s usually at night when I lie down in bed :)

Hannah – keep an eye on them, maybe they will expand their service to the UK. Is Netflix in the UK?

Wow! That is indeed a very good alternative.. Instead of buying one, then why not rent a book.. Great!

Great post. Given the price of books, its hard for those of us that read a lot to be able to afford best sellers. I did a comparison of book rentals to library’s at http://www.squidoo.com/RentBooksOnline if you are interested

Why not rent books at the library, get this, for free? If you have time to read a novel, you have time to get it. It’s so lazy to pay extra to get something shipped to you when it’s usually free to pick up.

Well I don’t know about anybody else, but I have a hard time finding current books. Any of the books I want to read in general are hard to get at my library. That is why I pay to get my books hae nothing to do with being lazy. I like to read what I want to read and this is cheaper and saves space in my house.

im gonna have to agree with Katt, renting from the library is ok but the library may not have what you need. i would just see if someone else has it then i could trade my book for theirs. collage textbooks are hard to come by without paying hundreds of dollars but there are easier ways. i like to go online and sell my college textbooks instead of giving them back to the school for a fraction of the price i bought it
