Wikipedia Needs Help I think every single person that surfs the internet has came across Wikipedia at one time or another. It is a massive wealth of information, and I reference it about 5-6 times a day.

Jimmy Wales the Wikipedia founder has made an appeal asking for donations to keep the site going. Since they have been so helpful to me in my daily life I decided to donate to them, and I think you should consider it as well.

Millions of people around the world will learn something new on Wikipedia today. Your donation helps the Wikimedia Foundation sustain Wikipedia and deliver new and innovative global programs to improve our quality, reach, and levels of participation.

How is the revenue spent?

  1. To support the continued operation of Wikipedia and our other free knowledge projects (by paying for servers, hosting, bandwidth, and operations staff)
  2. To continue the development of the open source software powering our projects
  3. To respond to requests from our volunteer community
  4. To support the growth and impact of our international volunteer community and the content in our projects through key events like Wikimania and Wikipedia Academies, through strategic partnerships, and through the cultivation of local chapters around the world
  5. To pay for financial, administrative, legal, and fundraising expenses

Please consider donating to Wikipedia and keep it ad free!

I think Wikipedia should be nationalized or taken over by the UN to protect it. :)

“Founder”? Why did you say “founder”, and not “co-founder”? Do you have some kind of personal animosity against Dr. Larry Sanger, that you would go along with this Wales-generated attempt at re-writing history, or did you just make a mistake?

Gregory – “Personal animosity?” Wow, that’s a stretch considering I don’t know who Sanger is.

The appeal as written by Jimmy Wales list him as the “founder.” I’m just spreading the word to help keep Wikipedia going.

I did give a small donation a few days ago. Having a few websites that I own in different niches that are linked on wikipedia pages and have gotten some good traffic from it so thought I would give back. I think it is time wikipedia just puts a small advertisement at the end of their pages or something because that wouldn’t bother me and it would save them.

Nash, that’s a good reason to donate. I REALLY don’t want to see ads on wikipedia, but if that’s the only way they can keep going, then I would accept it.

I didn’t know Wikipedia was in any sort of trouble. What happened? Everyone loves it!

I would strongly consider the good intent of my donation to an organization that deliberately revises the actual history of Wikipedia having been co-founded by two people, not one. And Sanger probably did twice as much work as Wales in the first 18 months that were critical to the project getting underway.

But, you all give them money if it makes you feel better. Do you even know how much they have budgeted for the compensation of the Director and the Deputy Director? $480,000. Sound reasonable to you?

Gregory – after researching who Sangers is, I now see your point of view, and welcome it here on my blog.

To be fair, Sangers is asking for donations for his site Citizendium.org also:

I misstated the compensation amount in my last comment. It is not $480,000. It is $472,000. I apologize for that error.
