K12 Inc. I’ve taken on many projects this year, and I’ve been given many titles, but the one I am most proud of is Homeschooling Mom.

I never thought in a million years I could do the whole homeschooling thing, but when I ran out of options for my struggling 9th grader, I knew I had to have faith in myself to help him succeed. I did a lot of research on homeschooling, and I knew that I needed as much guidance as I could get, so I decided to go with K12 Inc.

K¹² Inc. is a technology-based learning company that offers curriculum and educational services created for online delivery to students in kindergarten through twelfth grade, or K-12. The K¹² curriculum is used by tens of thousands of students across the country in virtual public schools, distance education programs, and traditional classrooms.

They sent him a new HP laptop and an HP scanner/printer, along with all his text books, and science lab equipment about a month ago. It’s taken a little getting use to their system, but his teachers have been a wonderful help, and he is thriving with straight A’s so far.

I know with him being in 9th grade, and almost 15, it is a little easier to homeschool because he doesn’t need my constant attention to stay on task. I just set up my laptop next to his at the kitchen table and we work together.

So if you are on Skype or IM’s with me and I suddenly disappear for awhile, now you will understand that my attention is needed elsewhere at the moment and I’m not ignoring you. It’s a new adventure for him and I, so we’re taking it slow and getting use to the new routine.

That’s pretty neat. Can he still interact with regular school activities – like clubs? I know that some homeschoolers have social clubs or events that they take place in. I’m glad to hear that he’s doing so well!! :D

Sadie – he is a skateboarder and has a VERY large social group that he hangs out with and skates with in a skate team. He has amazing social skills already, so I’m not too worried about that “con” of homeschooling.

MyAvatars 0.2 Ryan on 16 December, 2008 at 7:23 pm

I wish I could be homeschooled. It would make working during the day so much easier. Of course, I wouldn’t wake up until noon which would defeat the purpose…

MyAvatars 0.2 Jules on 16 December, 2008 at 7:34 pm

Ryan, you’re almost done with school right? Are you a senior this year?

MyAvatars 0.2 Ryan on 16 December, 2008 at 7:36 pm

Junior. ;) Although, I am on this computer enough anyways. I think it would be weird having my Senior year without being at…school…for stuff like football, dances, etc. These sorta schools usually cost 5-6,000 a year. ;)

Although, if you improve your grades why not. Some home schooled kids in our district are allowed to participate in electives at the high school/middle/elementary.

MyAvatars 0.2 Jules on 16 December, 2008 at 7:45 pm

Ryan, I have thought about that “senior year” thing and since he’s only a freshman now, he still may decide to go back to the high school at some point.

MyAvatars 0.2 Ryan on 16 December, 2008 at 7:47 pm

Yeah, but I bet it will be strange transition. Anywho, I hate public education. YEAH for distance learning.

MyAvatars 0.2 Jules on 16 December, 2008 at 7:49 pm

Ryan, very true. Thanks for your insight on this topic, I appreciate it!

MyAvatars 0.2 Hildy on 16 December, 2008 at 8:50 pm

This is cool :) The school setting is not for everyone and your son is lucky that you are willing to help find what works for him.

MyAvatars 0.2 daria369 on 16 December, 2008 at 8:57 pm

This is wonderful, Julie! I was homeschooling my kids until they were ready to go to school…

MyAvatars 0.2 Connie on 16 December, 2008 at 9:16 pm

Congrats on homeschooling. My older dd had a terrible time in middle school/high school. I didn’t homeschool her but she took a lot of online classes to avoid having to go to school so much. She is doing fantastic. Graduated hs & college early. At 21 is in Grad school. It’s what’s best for your child that works.

I wish I could afford to home school. We are having so many problems this year, public school drives me nuts, but it’s just not financially do-able for me to do.
I contacted the county school board o ask about it all, and there is just no way I can afford it, I’d have to have a really high paying job or win the lotto.

I’m glad you are able to do it though, some kids just do not thrive in a regular school setting, they need one on one time, their own ways of learning, environment etc, so good for you!
I really hope it all works out for the both of you. :)

MyAvatars 0.2 Hannah on 17 December, 2008 at 4:06 am

Jules if it’s not too nosey can I ask how come you took the homeschool option? It’s just out of interest. My brother was pulled out of the middle school we went to and started private school because he needed extra special needs stuff that the school he was at couldn’t give him.

I am really happy to hear that he is doing so well Julie. I can imagine how hard of a decision it was, but you made the right one.

In the state of GA you get the K12 curriculum for FREE and work with GA appointed teachers. We have friends who were homeschooling with K12 b4 GA started doing it, and when it went into effect, they got their money back. It really is a high quality program.

Thanks Hildy, I appreciate that coming from you, and especially since you are a teacher.

MyAvatars 0.2 Jules on 17 December, 2008 at 8:50 am

Oh that’s wonderful to hear Connie!

MyAvatars 0.2 Jules on 17 December, 2008 at 8:52 am

Kat, here in the state of NV the K12 curriculum is FREE, and like Alli said it’s FREE in the state of GA also. You should check out their site and see if it’s FREE in FL as well.

MyAvatars 0.2 Jules on 17 December, 2008 at 8:52 am

Daria, when you say that it makes me think back when mine were young also. I guess as mother, we all homeschooled our children when they were small.

MyAvatars 0.2 Jules on 17 December, 2008 at 8:56 am

Hannah, he was just bored in class, and boredom lead to goofing off and not paying attention.

He had over 35 kids in one class and between paperwork, grading, attendance, and discipline, the teacher had about 20 minutes for actually class time learning. (this is not the teachers fault at all, it’s the system)

At home he can get a 6 hour school day done in about 3-4 hours and actually learn something.

MyAvatars 0.2 Jules on 17 December, 2008 at 9:00 am

Alli – it’s FREE here in the state of NV also, and we have NV appointed teachers also. I’m glad to hear your friends are having a successful time with it. What grades are your friends children/child in?

MyAvatars 0.2 Kat on 17 December, 2008 at 11:22 am

Thanks for the info, I will definitely check and see if it’s free here too. I just know both of my sons would do much better out of public school.

Thanks!

MyAvatars 0.2 Jules on 17 December, 2008 at 11:34 am

Good luck Kat and if I can help answer any questions just let me know!

Congrats Jules! Our son has been attending Odyssey Charter school since its inception (3rd grade and he’s graduating this year)! Also OMG snow that is sticking on the ground in inches!! Have you seen the palm trees?!?!?!

MyAvatars 0.2 Jules on 17 December, 2008 at 4:50 pm

Diane, that is awesome! The snow is so much fun! I’ve been taking pictures all day long!

MyAvatars 0.2 Lisa on 18 December, 2008 at 3:32 pm

Hey Jules,

I’m wondering why you decided to homeschool? If you don’t mind me asking that is. I’m contemplating taking my child out of the public school system and homeschooling him myself. Although I’m not sure if I’d have enough time to dedicate to it. How much time do you dedicate to it everyday?

MyAvatars 0.2 Jules on 18 December, 2008 at 9:00 pm

Lisa, like I said in a reply to one of my readers above, he was bored in school which led him to goof off and not learn.

MyAvatars 0.2 Jules on 18 December, 2008 at 9:00 pm

Aahz – good luck with that, and I hope it works out for you two!

MyAvatars 0.2 Trisha Lyn Fawver on 19 December, 2008 at 1:56 am

That’s really cool of you. My husband was home schooled every grade except 6th & 7th. One thing he complains of is that he didn’t get the traditional high school experience, so that might be something to keep an eye on.

Good luck!

I think you will be wonderful at homeschooling!

MyAvatars 0.2 Jules on 19 December, 2008 at 8:55 pm

Trisha – he does have an older brother who is a senior in high school, so it’s almost like he is getting the “experience” through him and his friends. They are all really close.

I most definitely will keep on eye on it though. My HS years were torture for me, but his bio-father says those were the greatest years of his life.

Maybe he’s leaning towards the “me” in that area of his life.

MyAvatars 0.2 Jules on 19 December, 2008 at 8:58 pm

Thanks Karen! I am definitely learning new things! I can read a topography map now, and I know what all the lines and contours mean!

(I don’t remember doing that in Earth Science, do you?)
