My hair was getting too dark, so I decided to try out Color Oops Extra Strength Hair Color Remover. It basically takes your dark hair to light hair so you can re-color to a different shade that you want. I was pretty surprised when the color that appeared was almost the exact color of my natural hair, minus all the brassy looking pieces, and the gray old lady roots.
Before color removal:
High school senior picture (1983) and my hair after color remover.
I waited about 15 hours then colored it with LOreal Feria Power Reds Hair Color – #R68 Ruby Rush (Rich Auburn True Red). With the help of my digital camera, I took pictures throughout the whole process, and you can see them here. The color on the box was the EXACT color I wanted, but it didn’t really turn out like that. I still think it’s too dark.
I think I am going to have to break down and have it done professionally somewhere. I’m either going to have them put some honey colored high lights in it, or just strip it down again and go for the lighter color red I want. Or maybe I’ll just ask them to shave it all off and start over. Who knows.

I don’t think the color is bad…it is just not what you are used to.

I vote to shave it all off! Heh heh…
If you had just a few highlights put in it might make it perfect – because it is a pretty color
Love your high school pic!

TheSnackHound – it is actually what I am use to, DARK RED
I want bright light red.

vein – This product really does work! If you look at my before pic (I forgot to add it to this post and I’m adding it now) it took ALL the dark color out.

Heather – HAHA! Thanks

Ah…I see. bright and light is soo hard. On the boxes they say it only works well if you have light hair to begin with. I colored my sister’s hair (she has kind of a “dishwater blonde/light brown” hair color) and it didn’t come out great either. I agree..maybe a pro will have to work with it.

Sigh – Right now I am facing those horrible, wiry gray hairs that are just poking out of my head and waiting to be plucked. But I can’t. I just can’t do it. I’ve got to wait until I see my hairdresser, for he will surely beat me soundly if I dare step into the drugstore and purchase my own hair color.
Three years ago I stepped into his place with orange hair after a horrible highlighting incident. He gave me this look of “What in the hell have you done?” Ever since then, it’s been professional haircolor all the way, and my hair has never looked better.
As far as your haircolor is concerned….what I am thinking is that since you used the haircolor remover (which I have used before), the color will lighten…and it won’t take as long as you think. See how it looks in a week or two.

Your color looks really good to me but if you don’t like it, that is of course meaningless. I’d go with the professional, just make sure you tell them about your color issues before they put anything on – or you might get the same results.
Good luck!

I love your natural color! It’s like a strawberry blonde – I’m so jealous! I like the color you picked, too. It would look great with some highlights mixed in, but I think you did a great job!
Every time I do mine myself I fry it…

TheSnackHound – I think I’m going to go with some high lights next week after payday

daria369 – that’s the plan next week after payday. I think high lights will look good in it.

Bellesouth – You know it is going to fade a bit so maybe it will fade into a lighter shade that I will like. HA!

I like the color (though I know you wanted it lighter). : )

As a woman who’s done the buzz cut look before… I dont recommend it. Seriously.

I wish you would’ve posted this like – a month ago so I wouldn’t have had to pay $150 to get the black stripped out of my hair!
I like that red – and I think if you did some lighter red and maybe even some blonde chunk highlights it would look REALLY cool!!

It’s growing on me a little bit and I had totally forgot that it would fade over time.

Tough Girl Kat – oh that’s right! HAHA! I don’t think I would have the guts to do it.

Christine – I never knew the Color Oops existed either until my friend Deb told me about it, but it was right there at the CVS with all the other hair coloring products.

Hi – I am glad color oops worked so well on removing your color… the important thing to remember is that once you use color oops your hair is very porous and will absorb the new hair color very quickly and become to dark, so you can not leave the color in for the full amount of time. Deep condition your hair prior to recoloring, then do a stand test for 5 minutes of the developer and color you want to use. It may only take 5 minutes to get the desired color. visit our website if you have any other questions.
