I applied for a job at Macy’s. The job is a part time seasonal gift wrapping position that would start in two weeks and last until January. SEASONAL – PART TIME. I got an email that stated I was over qualified.
Well really Macy’s. Did you think that I wasn’t aware of this before I applied with your company? Have you read the newspaper lately, or watched TV? Our county is in an economic crisis, and people all over the US are taking jobs that they are over qualified for. It’s called survival.
How can someone be over qualified for a seasonal position, really? These positions are generally created so the company doesn’t have to spend much money on the employee right? People applying for these positions are generally looking for a little extra cash around the holidays right?
Whatever your thought process is Macy’s you missed out. Because I wrap a kick ass gift and I have fun doing it, with a smile on my face.

your should email them with exactly what you just posted and include that picture….I am a terrible gift wrapper and I only buy the gift bags anymore…so its Macy’s loss by the sounds and looks of things.

I agree with Breezie. Maybe they were afraid you’d ask for manager’s rate.
All I can say is, thank god for gift bags! LOL!

cady – you’ve got me thinking that maybe I should start my own business from home wrapping presents for busy people this holiday season.

It’s sad. My sister is desperate for a job right now and Target, Borders, and Cost Plus have all declined to hire her for the same reason. She’s been a store manager before, so they won’t hire her for retail clerk work. Really crappy, she needs the money, she’s a loyal employee, a hard worker, and will take pretty much anything, even minimum wage with no benefits is fine with her. She just took time off to have a baby and now that he’s 2, she can’t find anything.
Best of luck to you!!

cchiovitti – that is sad
What are these employers thinking? I think they should at least interview us and see why we are applying for the position. Good luck to your sister, I will be sending her employment vibes

That’s hilarious. I think everyone that applies for the gift wrapping position is over qualified …. my 10 year old is probably over qualified.
Gift wrapping experience – check!

I don’t feel so bad anymore. I have been getting that for well over 2 years because I have an associate degree.
I just don’t get it, I thought seasonal meant they wanted you to leave eventually

Holly – RIGHT! It’s very obvious to me that I don’t want a Macy’s career, why they don’t see that is beyond me.

I think you should send your story to all the major newspapers (give some background info too) as this is really a human interest story all across the country.
A lot of people are feeling the pinch right now and this type of article would hit home… and ’tis (nearly) the season for goodwill – your phone should be ringing off the wall with job offers!!!
Macy’s failed this one.

I think your would-be-boss was afraid that you’d do such a good job you’d take their position. I’ve gotten similar responses from a lot of jobs around this town and I think that they don’t understand that a lot of people are taking pay cuts just ot make it through the season.
Your gifts also look great!

I think you should go to people’s houses and wrap presents for them! They tell you the color scheme, you bring the supplies, and charge for materials plus an hourly rate. I’d love to have someone wrap my presents and put them right under the tree looking pretty!

Heather in Beautiful BC – just got back from that exact job fair (it was yesterday), but it didn’t seem like anyone was interested in hiring on the spot. I gave out a lot of resumes though!
I may submit this to our local news station. I see this topic is getting a lot of national coverage right now from the New York Times to the Los Angeles Times.
[Reply]
Tough Girl Kat – That very well might be the case, and thanks for the compliment on my gifts
[Reply]
corrin – I am totally looking into doing this, but I don’t think I can get the business license in time, plus the cost of insurance might be hard to come up with.
[Reply]
Amazing gift wrapping skills! You’ll find another seasonal job, just keep on looking.
[Reply]
Gift wrapping and decorating trees and houses for people would be a good seasonal job.
[Reply]
Chrystal K. – thanks, but the market is looking pretty dismal
[Reply]
Karen – I’m not so sure about decorating the house thing. I don’t think I’m very good at that. But then again if it’s not my money that might be fun!
[Reply]
Try applying to another store, but this time leave off most of your experience. Should work.
I wouldn’t think it’s worth your time for a business license doing gift wrapping. You can do it as a sole propietorship without problems. Worst case, some nut job could sue you for a broken gift which they wouldn’t do since legal fees would be as much as the cost of the gift.
