Here's how to do gravestone rubbings: http://genealogy.about.com/cs/cemetery/ht/rubbing.htm But people do this on all kinds of things - sometimes kids have to go around their houses and rub all kinds of stuff, take it back to school, and their classmates have to guess what the thing was!

I like your idea! And before you set it up, you could do some rubbings of the Zodiac signs - that'd be cool, too!

LMM - well it's an "Art Deco" platter, so no it's just for decoration. That site said that it is worth $100-200 bucks. I think I will hold on to it though and make some type of candle alter type thingy with it.

Platter? You mean, like - you serve food on it? But isn't it bulky and heavy - and isn't it ...like, not flat on the bottom?

I'm still corn-fused.

Darn! You've already had the answer. From the top it looks like a lamp shade!

Of course, it also looks like a DVD without the hole in the center! :)

I have the same dish at my house. It belonged to my grandparents. My mom thinks its just a serving platter. Shes not sure, that just her guess.

I feel like it should be some sort of alter. Placing candles on and around it.

Mine has a stamp in the center on the back. "Kensington" with a stags head image. I looked that up and it seems to be just a decorative platter. This particular peice is the "18 zodiac platter, there are a few different sizes. I also came across a Kensington Compass platter, It has the same gold ring but instead of the zodiac symbols it has "N", "E", "S", "W" along with designs like light houses that sort of thing. It has a compas rose etched in the center.
