While going through my books today for the book sale I am having on Saturday, I came across this thing in Michael’s mom stuff and I have no idea what is is. The circle in the middle is made of brass and it has the 12 zodiac symbols in a circle. There are no hooks or anything on the back, so I don’t think it is just some thing you hang on your wall. And it’s 18″ in diameter.
Here are three pictures. One of the front, a closeup of the zodiac symbols, and the back. You can click on the picture to enlarge it.
Do you guys have any clue as to what it might be? Edit: mystery solved, see the answer below the pictures.
DING DING DING – Mystery solved by my Twitter friend Jack Leblond from JackLeblond.com. It’s an 18 INCH ZODIAC PLATTER. 18 inch Art Deco aluminum and brass Kensington Ware Zodiac platter, cat. no. 7100.
As seen on this auction list item # 2710. Thanks Jack!

Top of a lamp?
Looks like a serving dish of some kind to me.

Pappy, I don’t think so, it’s fairly heavy.
Does the circle in the middle move independently? If so, it’s a stargate to transport you to other realities. Give it a spin and have a nice trip.

I’m really pretty sure it’s a Zodiac spaceship. You know, if you do your research on the Zodiac calendar, you will find that we first adopted it from aliens. Yep – sure did.

Skeet, no it doesn’t spin, but damn that would be cool!
I would take it to an antique dealer someplace before I would ever consider selling it. Almost looks like some sort of a part to a sun dial.

LMM, are you being serious or sarcastic? I sooooo want it to be something cool like that!
Breezie – I have no plans on selling it ever unless of course it’s worth $$$$$$$ then it’s so gone! LOL!
A lazy susan?

Steven-Sanders (because your hyphen is so cool) Maybe, but it just seems to want to be something freaky to me. Maybe that’s just my wishful thinking.
I was thinking part of some kind of sun dial also ….
but maybe it’s just a sheild for you know greek sword fighting or something -lol-
Lorettas last blog post..Taking a moment to breathe ……
hey it might be the top of a table, with a pedastle thingy to go under it?
LMM – I figured as much coming from you
Loretta – you play too many MMORPG’s HAHAHA!
I’ll admit that being part of a WOW costume crossed my mind!
Actually, it may be part of a wall fixture, like something you’d see in a restaurant or maybe a club; the four holes at the back may mean it was attached to a bracket…
Maybe a mold for ceramics
Flatten a layer of clay over the top press it into the brass part to get a good impression
Harry – his mother did own an art gallery so it is VERY possible it is some type of ceramic mold.
Geo – yes, there are 4 small holes that are plugged with something, so maybe the “bracket” broke off of it.
I think the 4 holes will match up with the fastener to the brass frontpiece
They were filled in to keep them in place
How about a photo from the side?
Mystery solved! Look at item # 2710
I have the same dish at my house. It belonged to my grandparents. My mom thinks its just a serving platter. Shes not sure, that just her guess.
I feel like it should be some sort of alter. Placing candles on and around it.
Mine has a stamp in the center on the back. “Kensington” with a stags head image. I looked that up and it seems to be just a decorative platter. This particular peice is the “18 zodiac platter, there are a few different sizes. I also came across a Kensington Compass platter, It has the same gold ring but instead of the zodiac symbols it has “N”, “E”, “S”, “W” along with designs like light houses that sort of thing. It has a compas rose etched in the center.
Mae – “I feel like it should be some sort of alter. Placing candles on and around it.” ME TOO!
akeorlando – That would be a neat lazy susan!
Klum – It would make kind of a neat table.
Darn! You’ve already had the answer. From the top it looks like a lamp shade!
Of course, it also looks like a DVD without the hole in the center!
Don
Platter? You mean, like – you serve food on it? But isn’t it bulky and heavy – and isn’t it …like, not flat on the bottom?
I’m still corn-fused.
Lisa Marie Marys last blog post..Gary Vaynerchuk Knocks It Outta the Park – Again!
LMM – well it’s an “Art Deco” platter, so no it’s just for decoration. That site said that it is worth $100-200 bucks. I think I will hold on to it though and make some type of candle alter type thingy with it.
I like your idea! And before you set it up, you could do some rubbings of the Zodiac signs – that’d be cool, too!
LMM – “rubbings” ?? What is that?
Here’s how to do gravestone rubbings: http://genealogy.about.com/cs/cemetery/ht/rubbing.htm But people do this on all kinds of things – sometimes kids have to go around their houses and rub all kinds of stuff, take it back to school, and their classmates have to guess what the thing was!
