My husband is convinced that our little baby kitty has autism. We laugh “with” her when she does things that strongly reflect signs of autism.
Today I decided to do some research to see if cats can really be autistic
After reading this I am in total agreement with my husband. My baby kitty is autistic!!!!!
- Fails to respond to his or her name - Go ahead. Call your cat. Unless your calling is also accompanied by the sound of a cat food can opening or the shake of a bag of treats, he ain’t listening.
- Poor eye contact - unless you’re a tuna, forget it. And go ahead. Try to have a staring contest with a cat.
- Appears not to hear you at times - how about all the time?
- Appears unaware of other’s feelings - I don’t know about your cats, but when I want to cuddle with mine, they usually just give me the shrug off. Besides, if you’ve been crying in a room, do your cats come running when they hear you? Usually not.
- Develops specific routines and rituals - like clawing a certain scratch post every time he comes in the room. Or has to have some of the milk from the cereal bowl in the evening.
- Moves constantly - a little less than they used to because of their age but they were constantly running all over the house, looking under the table, smelling each other butts, licking their paws….oh look! A mousie!
- Becomes disturbed at the slightest change in routine or rituals - I’m risking a pissed on bathroom carpet if the litterbox isn’t cleaned every Friday. And god forbid I be late to feed them!
- Develops specific routines and rituals - Needs to be fed at 5:30 and at 9:00. Must be brushed before 10. Must be given a treat before leaving the house. Not following any of these routines leaves my house at risk of a rampage.
- Displays a lack of interest in toys - I can buy them a $20 toy at Petsmart, but they’ll never touch it. The box it came in, however…..
- Happier to be alone - uh….it’s a cat.
- Repetitive use of language - Meow. Meow. Meow. Meow. Meow. Meow. Commonly heard at mealtime.
P.S. (And puhlease before you get all bitchy on me in my comments, I need to tell you that I am in NO WAY making fun of autism, or children with autism.)

I have a cat exactly like yours. I call her PITA (pain in the ass) cat but I love her!

Michelle - PITA! HA, that’s a GREAT name for a cat!

My cat is pretty easy-going. I can’t complain. But he definitely has traits; of course, the problem with unprofessional diagnoses is that those traits can belong to ANYONE (or in this case, any cat). It’s hard to judge what’s pathological and what’s not.

Reading your post reminds me of my mom’s fatcat. He MUST be vacuumed every day…no lie. If Mom is vacuuming the floor he will cry and lay in front of the vacuum until she gives in and goes to get the attachment. Too funny!!

That definitely describes at least one of my cats! LOL I always say those little pointed things on top of her head are purely decoration, like devil’s horns, because she surely doesn’t use them for listening.

Hehe!
I never realized how much autistic children and kitties have in common? Maybe we need to get a cat for Pablo?

I am sorry to hear that your cat may be autistic. However I am sure this will not hinder you in your love for her. We are second class citizens to the cats in our house and slaves to their every whim.

I think all cats are autistic. I really do not like them. They are furry and scratch things…not like dogs that are furry and cute.
