If you’ve been a reader of my blog for any length of time, you surely know about my dismay with the Clark County School District. That means that you also know that I’m not one of those parents that think my kid is perfect, and it’s all the schools fault. My kids are bored at school, and when they get bored they stop caring/trying. That’s not the best trait, and we have tried many different approaches to deal with that. I’ve talked to their teachers, counselors, administration, and other parents to no avail. I got no answers, and no help.

It took a friend that I talk to online to point me in the right direction. She found an alternative to the Clark County traditional school called Independent Study. I made a phone call, got an appointment, and soon after my youngest son Justin was enrolled. He didn’t take off as quickly as I would have hoped, but he soon got a schedule down and has done really well. His older brother J.R. soon followed lead, and signed up as well.

Both of them, are a grade level above their peers, and are thriving academically. They do their credit classes Math/English/Science, but they also have the free time to explore other interest like music, art, and finance. Three subjects that are not available in our school district. *Sigh* I have seen the most incredible growth in both of them, and I am very proud. There have been times when I questioned this approach, as it didn’t feel “normal” to what society tells us about education, but I stuck with it because they were accelerating.

But every doubt I had was solidified this week by the latest news report about our school district. Semester exams were held in January, and 91% of the high school students in the whole school district (17,586) failed the Algebra 1 test. FAILED! Yes…didn’t pass. 91% !!!! 87% FAILED Geometry, and 88% FAILED Algebra 2.

Who’s to blame? I live in a city whose annual gambling revenue is in the billions of dollars every year, and the teachers earn $35K a year.

All I can do is stand up for my kids and demand accountability…or take them out of the “system” and let them thrive.

What would you do?

Source: 91% + 87% + 88% = FAILED plus sample questions of the exam.

for some reason i always had it in my head that clark county had a great school system. my sil’s family lived in lv for years and both of her kids attended, and my mil taught in clark county for a few years, and i’ve never heard anything negative from either of them.

holy cow Julie, those are HUGE numbers. I’m so glad the alternative solution is working so well

you are of my same mind. the main reason my son isnt in schools around here is because they are among the top 200 worst districts of the USA list!

I know that maths is a tough subject to learn. But not so tough so that one gets failed.I think they should work hard and learn properly and they will pass in exams.

I’m so glad for your sons, Jules. I think we all need to keep in mind that the NEA is a teacher’s union, interested in protecting their own. They are NOT interested in how best to educate our children. Like it or not, that’s a major problem with our public schools, not just in your state but across the country.

Wow, those numbers are outrageous. But totally believable. Teachers make so little, the no child left behind act is a complete joke forcing kids to take tests that make no sense and they study all year just to try and pass it.

Glad to hear your boys are doing so well Jules, that’s really great.
I had the same kind of issues with Mark, my oldest, and this year I put him in independent study too.
Guess who’s doing really well this year?
Yup, Mark.
He’s thriving now whereas before, he struggled and failed.

It’s not the students fault they are failing, the schools are failing our students.

Glad you’ve found an alternative to educate your boys. In addition to what Marisa said about the unions, public schools are failing because of too much federal government intervention. Put it all together with the influx of kids that don’t speak English and it’s no wonder kids don’t learn.

I knew the public school system was falling apart back when I was in it when I (6th in a graduating class of several hundred) didn’t know that Montana was a state until I saw a license plate in a Target parking lot in college. I even had to take a remedial English writing class in college because I couldn’t diagram a sentence. I wrote well only because I read a lot and knew what “sounded” right.

I was bored in school, too, and being involved in the music program was the only thing that saved me. It sickens me when I hear that those programs are most gone now. I tried being a music teacher and quit because I couldn’t deal with how mess up schools were (and they’ve only gotten worse in the 15 years since).

I believe the system is broke beyond repair. Homeschooling and alternative ed is the only way children are truly going to get a decent education. Kudos for caring and going good by your sons.

What is this Independent Study you speak of? Did you mean off or of there at the end? I HATE that I am stuck in this sand trap with two kids now. I want to get them out of here and back to the East Coast where education take higher priority. 91% thats just sad. Your a 5th grader and not smarter than a 4th grader!!

Being that my kids aren’t in school yet, this scares the crap out of me. As of right now, the elementary school does not have art or music. They are considering getting rid of recess too. Well, this is what you get when barebone the schools.

I am sooo glad that your boys are doing well. :)

I WAS a lifelong Las Vegas resident until my kids started school and I realized just how dire the system is out there…..

Good luck.

Good for you for doing what is best for your kids. It sounds like it is a really good fit.

Of course, this post begs the question. How would your kids doing independent study do on these tests? Of course, we’re all happy that they feel good about what they are doing and that is definitely half the battle. Failing doesn’t do anything, but kill any motivation to learn. However, I would find it interesting to see how independent study students would do on these tests too. I imagine and hope they’d do better than the other students. Independent study does require a lot of diligence.

Is nice to know that your child do well in academic now…Indeed, math is a quite hard subject to learn..but it still can overcome if someone willingly to put a lot of efforts to deal with it..so surprise that 91% failed in math..>.

MyAvatars 0.2 erp on 30 March, 2008 at 10:34 am

what the student doing at school? gambling maybe…

Here’s another sobering thought. A percentage of those kids who failed math exams this year will become math teachers themselves, and they still won’t be able to explain the principles to their students. That, I think, is the heart of the problem, and the cycle will only continue getting worse.

It’s so great that your boys are excelling right now! Its true that you had hard times with them at school. And its you who can judge your kids better.

The reason why we sent our kids to school is to learn and whatever the subject is may it difficult or not is the responsible of the teachers or the institution to have various different learning strategy none of a gifted child loves to learn on a boring-routinary poor strategy thus child refuse to participate in any activity. Unfortunately the poor strategy lead to our child’s benefits.

i like it here as i like to exchange from you!:)

Have a great day:)

We have homeschooled our kids for 12+ years. The level of their education is stunning professors at the Ivy League schools (we are not sending them to the Ivy League schools, either). Like Marisa said, the NEA is a union looking out for the Union. Public education is so degenerate now that it’s a joke.

Mark Twain so aptly put it, “I never let my schooling interfere with my education.”
