I didn’t go to work yesterday, because I was experiencing some side effects from a new medication I am taking. But that is for another post.
I was lying in bed, and our local news cut in with images of the Monte Carlo on fire. I watched the coverage for almost two hours, and couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Although this had nothing to do with planes, box cutters, and terrorist, I couldn’t help but think about that 9/11 morning watching the towers collapse, and wondering what caused this fire.

We still don’t know what the cause was this morning, but everyone is safe, no one got hurt, and it wasn’t a terrorist attack. I guess 9/11 will forever haunt the memories of those of us who watched it that morning.
My friend Lola works at the Monte Carlo, but she wasn’t on shift during the fire, and they were closed last night so she didn’t have to go in. I was really worried about her job though, because in the service industry, those tips are the biggest part of your income. The Monte Carlo did release a statement on their website about their employees status. They really know how to treat their employees. I have great respect for this company now.
Statement from Anton Nikodemus to Monte Carlo Employees concerning pay and benefits
January 25th, 7:25 p.m
Starting today, Monte Carlo employees will receive pay, health and welfare benefits and toke and tip replacement for the lesser of 30 days or the re-opening of Monte Carlo. These payments will be offset if during that 30-day period a Monte Carlo employee accepts another position at another MGM MIRAGE property or company or accepts employment outside MGM MIRAGE. Also, if a Monte Carlo employee accepts a position with a non-MGM MIRAGE company and is subjected to a waiting period before receiving health benefits, then MGM MIRAGE will continue to provide the employee’s health benefits for the lesser of 30 days or the re-opening of Monte Carlo.
Wow. Isn’t it amazing how something like this can trigger so many memories?
I recall another Las Vegas fire from the 1980s where the results were a lot more tragic. Glad nobody was hurt this time.

I was wondering about the employees. I am glad the Monte Carlo is helping them as much as they can.

That’s really great. Reminds me of how good Harrah’s was to their employees in the gulf after Katrina. My family was visiting the day before the hurricane hit, and lots of employees were concerned.
