JR, my oldest son, got some bad news last night. They let him go from his job. He had a scheduling issue where he didn’t show up for work on a day he should have, and since he is still on probation they gave him the boot. No one likes to get fired, so he did feel crappy about it last night.
But he was planning on giving them his two week notice because he didn’t think he could swing his junior year and hold down a job. So in the end I guess it worked out for everyone. Just last night he was thinking about applying at the video game store though, because he said he’s going to miss his paycheck. He’s got some decisions to make.
But today, as I was digging a story on digg.com, I came across another story that was on time.com about the Worst Jobs in America, and being a grocery store worker was one of the TOP THREE! I can’t wait to show him when I get home. Maybe getting fired out of that business at an early age is a blessing in disguise.
grocery store, worst jobs, baggers, courtesy clerks
Sounds like it worked out, even if being fired stings a little!
I am so emailing that link to Jim. HA!
I wish they had actually listed all ten. I wonder if my job would be on that list. After all, I’m on my feet for a minimum of 7 hours, often more. I don’t make what a grocery bagger makes, even. And I get slammed with stress on every shift.
HA Colleen
I’m sure they are not talking about ALL grocery stores. JR’s store was actually very nice, and he was paid well for being 16. I’m sure Jim wouldn’t be working in a crappy one for ALL THESE YEARS either ![]()
Oh Ann, that sounds AWFUL!
Yeah. I’m currently debating with myself whether to move on to something else or stick it out in hopes I can climb that ladder and get to an easier rung. In the meantime, I think I’m losing my pizazz. Not to mention my mind!
Good luck with your decision Ann. It’s not worth it being miserable at your job.
Too bad for JR but it is difficult trying to schedule a job with high school and good for him for realizing it. Tyler has the perfect high school job. He works 6 to 10 hours a week. Enough for spending money but not enough to effect his schoolwork.
Glad he is aware enough that he needs to think about how to juggle the demands of being a student and a good employee. I think a lot of kids don’t understand so early in life.
Aw. It’s too bad that it happened that way but good that he knows what his priorities are.
I wish him luck with the video store thing. Maybe it is all for the better.

These things have a habit of working out for the best but it so bothers me when an employer feels the need to let someone go after a misunderstanding. They don’t deserve to attract good staff.
I worked in a supermarket as a cashier - I didn’t mind it. I worked for the federal government, after that - at the federal government retirement system. The local paper did an article on the 10 worst jobs in Washington DC - it was hilarious (but not really true I don’t think). They list a couple other jobs that I really wouldn’t want - city rat exterminator is one I remember.
I think its awesome that he looked at things so responsibly. I worked in a grocery store and yes, it was a crappy job. You see way too much and learn way too much about society to not be disgusted. ![]()
