There is nothing like the power of a blog to spread the word about a bad experience you had with a retail chain, a business, or a restaurant. In fact this blog is living proof of that, as I was including in an article in the Wall Street Journal about my bad experience with the Best Buy “In Store Pickup” shopping option, and I was contacted for a local focus group about the bad experience I had with Quiznos delivery service.

The power of the blog is speaking again, and this time it’s about Port Of Subs. Great sandwiches, quality out of this world, friendly employees, and always clean. We love this deli and we frequent it often. The one we go to is located at 2285 N. Green Valley Parkway in Green Valley, right down the street from our house. I even have a Port Of Subs frequent sandwich buyer card that they give me a stamp for every sandwich I buy. When you hit the ten stamp mark, you get a free one.

So it was just Michael and I tonight, and I had my card full with stamps. That meant a free sandwich with the purchase of another. We headed out around 8:30 to get some food, only to find the doors locked! The sign on the door, clearly said closing time was at 9:00. There were a group of teenage girls hanging outside that told us they were closed, and a group of teenage boys inside frantically trying to get the place clean so they could leave. Okay, I understand that. The girls are waiting, let’s close this place up, but it’s still a business, and they should stay open until the posted time. They should take customers right up until the posted closing time, and then clean up.

I hate to get some teenage kids in trouble, but this is a business and it should be treated as such. My teenager is currently applying for his first job, and I expect him to follow the rules of his employer. I’m firing off a letter to corporate now. I’m not pleased.

There is both a Dairy Queen and a Subway here that tend to do that… It was especially frustrating on the nights I was counting on them to still be open to get dinner before work when I didnt have time to stop elsewhere… you hate to get people in trouble, but the times are posted for a reason.

I’m sure their owner will appreciate the tip. We had some kids try that when I was working pizza and I turned them in because those extra orders they may have gotten were money I was supposed to have in my pocket since I worked for a percentage of sales.

Hi LaDonna, YES exactly! The only way to contact them through the website was a “guest book.” Who has a guest book anymore? This isn’t GeoCities for God’s sake. LOL! I may just have to stop in and speak to the manager.

Don’t think of it as “getting them into trouble.” You’re teaching these kids a valuable life lesson by pursuing this — and yes, the owner will appreciate finding out how much business these kids are costing him!

I think that contacting the owner/manager is a good idea – presumably the kids are getting paid until the regular closing time. From another perspective Travis used to work for a sub shope and very occasionally they did close early. The times I know about were weather related where the student worker lived in the country and the weather was so bad her parents said they would come at a certain time for her (presumably they contacted the manager on her belhalf and nobody would be frequenting the store in a snowstorm). The other reason I’m aware of is when kids were sick/didn’t show up for their shift and the previous shift wasn’t available to stay until regular closing time. In these cases the manager would have been aware. If customers had called she would have realized that business was lost. If nobody called maybe nobody noticed.

Port of subs is horrible! They have gone downhill and my family and friends don’t eat at port of subs anymore. I called port of subs corporate office and complained to a really rude person in graphics who told me I should go somewhere else if I’m not happy. Basically, port of subs sucks.
