I live for music. I bleed Treble and Bass Clef. Seriously. There is something about music that touches me deep down inside and I actually can start crying it can be so emotional at times.

There is a song that they play a lot during the holiday season that will bring tears to my eyes immediately. Every.single.time I hear it on the radio, like just now.

The song is Do They Know It’s Christmas a song written by Bob Geldof and recorded by BandAid. BandAid was a group of Irish and British rock musicians including, David Bowie, Bono, Paul McCartney, Boy George, George Michael, Sting, and a sleuth of other artist. It was written to bring awareness to the famine in Africa, and raise money for the people of Ethiopia.

Does music ever bring tears to your eyes? What song and why? Here is mine.

Do They Know It’s Christmas
BAND AID
recorded on November 25, 1986

It’s Christmastime
There’s no need to be afraid
At Christmastime, we let in light and we banish shade
And in our world of plenty we can spread a smile of joy
Throw your arms around the world at Christmastime

But say a prayer

Pray for the other ones
At Christmastime it’s hard, but when you’re having fun
There’s a world outside your window
And it’s a world of dread and fear
Where the only water flowing is the bitter sting of tears
And the Christmas bells that ring there are the clanging
chimes of doom
Well tonight thank God it’s them instead of you

And there won’t be snow in Africa this Christmastime
The greatest gift they’ll get this year is life
Oooh) Where nothing ever grows
No rain nor rivers flow
Do they know it’s Christmastime at all?

(Here’s to you) raise a glass for everyone
(Here’s to them) underneath that burning sun
Do they know it’s Christmastime at all?

Feed the world
Feed the world

Feed the world

Let them know it’s Christmastime again

Feed the world
Let them know it’s Christmastime again

On this day..

I’ve always thought it was an arrogant song. Those people aren’t even christian for the most part…. Why do they care if it’s christmas time?! Do you care that it’s haunakkah or eid al adha?? Do you know it’s Eid ul-Adha time at all?

I have several that make me cry:

“Honey” by Bobby Goldsboro

“I Can Only Imagine” by Mercy Me

“Thank You” by Ray Boltz

“Friends” by Michael W. Smith

And “Home for Christmas” by Steven Curtis Chapman

Hey—This is MY song–and you can’t have it!!! Wink Wink! I was in 7th grade when this came out and was a Duran Duran freak! They are in it, and my girlfriend and I had it taped and memorized and videoed. I even had the huge Band Aid poster. Everytime it comes on the radio–I shush my kids, turn it up, and I’m in the 7th grade again! Ahhhhhh, the memories!!

I love “Do they know it’s Christmas” It especially made me cry last year after I had become a mom. We get so sappy then. :)

I am such a sap, almost any song that is beautiful or meaningful makes me cry. I was watching Sesame Street with my little one bawling my eyes out because they had Norah Jones singing with Elmo!

“And there won’t be snow in Africa this Christmastime
The greatest gift they’ll get this year is life”

This is the part where I’m usually crying while still trying to sing along…

This song…and there’s another one…can’t think of it at the moment.
