Something is wrong with my car. Like something really really wrong. It’s been so cold in the mornings on the 30 minute ride to school that I need to run the heater. Except when I turn the heater on the entire car fills up with either an exhaust smell or a gas smell. I can’t decipher exactly which one it is, but I know it’s not suppose to have an odor like that. I just want some heat for my cold fingers and toesies!

Are there any mechanics out there with any ideas for me?

On this day..

I am not a mechanic but I have had experiences with the same symptoms. It sounds like you have an exhaust leak - probably in the manifold. It’s best to have that looked at as soon as possible, because it can lead to other problems, not to mention inhaling all that carbon monoxide! ACK!

my bus did that - i called it the kevorkian switch:

It’s the red one. Red = Dead.
Eventually I found that it would out all of the smell and clear up.

Sounds like you got an air-cooled engine ? Old VW, maybe ? The heat exchanger around the exhaust manifold could be f****d. Drive with the windows open….
