Camping last weekend was great, but more on that in another post. I’d like to tell you about what happened while we were camping in the mountains with no cell phone service on Saturday afternoon.

Some of you may remember reading about this and the follow up here. Well it happened again.

Justin broke his wrist while skateboarding at the high school Saturday afternoon. Luckily for us, he was with his father, and he was able to get him the emergency treatment he needed and boy was it an emergency!

They had to call in his pediatric orthopedic doctor that he had with his ankle to do emergency surgery on him. Yes, they put my little man under to put his arm bone and his muscle back into place on his wrist before casting it. They had him all hooked up to the machines, an IV drip of morphine, and the mask filled with the anesthesia.

His father said the force they used to move it all back into place almost made him faint. As much as I feel bad about not being there, because after all my job as a mother is to always be there; part of me is glad I did not have to see that. I’m not sure I would have been able to watch.

He had to stay longer than usual afterwards because he woke up very violently from the mixture of the morphine and anesthesia. He threw up for hours and hours and was not having a good time. He couldn’t hear himself talk, and he had to close one eye to be able to focus. He was having a hard time answering basic questions they were asking of him also.

When we came down from the mountain and I had cell service I immediately called home to hear the news. I did my share of crying in the car, for him, for not being there when he was going through all this, for the pain he must have felt, and my guilt as a mother, of course. He goes back to the doctor on Wednesday to check on how he is doing. I’m very grateful they called in a specialist to do the surgery and make sure everything was set properly.

I’m much better today, and so is he. I kept him home from school, just because I wanted to be with him, and it’s really hard to take Loratab and function at school. Of course he is lying on the couch watching…you guess…all his skateboarding videos!

OMG you poor thing. I know how hard it must have been for you to find out he got hurt while you were away (((hugs))).

And poor Justin too. I know he’s in pain and feeling even worse about not being able to go skate right now. (((Justin)))

I hope you get a good report when you go back in and that he heals up nicely.

How long will the cast have to be there? It looks yucky. Glad it could be taken care of quickly.

Well that was his “art work” with a Sharpie. LOL! I think they will remove it tomorrow at the doctor to look at it again, Xray, then recast.

maybe he should try something softer - like ballet or ribbon twirling.

Oh no Justin. Grey hairs for mom. You’re going to have big payback time when you grow up. Probably in the form of a child who likes to swing from trees and parasail.

Late to the game, but good lord! Ever thought about locking him in a cage until he’s 40? LOL! Poor Justin…that had to have hurt. :(
