I know there are a lot of cat lovers out there and I need your opinions. I wondered what would be best to get, a male, or a female baby kitty, when you already have another cat in the house.

Justin’s friend’s cat is pregnant and he gets the first pick of the babies. We have just one cat now. She will be 4 in April of next year. I of course want the cats to get along, and I don’t want Dizzy to freak out.

Is there a “rule-of-thumb” when adding another cat to the mix?

On this day..

You’ll probably get as many opposite answers, but I say go for the female.

We had two females and a male. The male was neutered, one of the females got a UTI and because of the blood in her urine, she smelled to the male like she was in heat…even though he was neutered. He violently attacked her several times…..even though they had lived together for 3 years.

We went through 6 weeks of vet visits, isolation, etc…..and in the end, we sadly had to give the male away.

It’s probably a one in a billion scenario….but that was our experience.

Sorry you asked???? LOL

I say go for a female, too.

I have a 16 yo female kitty that was an only cat for more than 11 years. She never liked my hubby and he was jealous of all of the affection she gave me so I got him a 4 month old female. I was afraid that my cat would not accept her since she had been an only cat for so long but it only took a couple of weeks before they became “friends”. (Clarifying that my cat was about 11 yo when the new one came into our family)

They’ve been together now for about 5 years. Now my cat is not well so they don’t play together as much but before she got sick they were constantly chasing each other around the house, rolling and tumbling around.

I don’t know if they get along because their both females or if they just eventually grew on each other. Good luck with whatever you choose! Just be prepared for an adjustment period!

My vote is for a male cat. We have 2 male cats and they get along great. We got Shadow as a kitten when Orson was around 3 years old. Love at first sight for them both. Both are neutered. I think that helps a lot.

Good luck with your new family member when he or she arrives. Kittens are so darn cute.

In my experience, male cats are friendlier and adapt more easily. I know your Dizzy is very friendly for a female cat and she will probably do fine with the new addition.

Dizzy can NOT be almost 4! That means it’s been way too long since I’ve seen you…. :-( :-( :-(

I would choose a female… Jay just got me 3 siamese females, they are adorable :)

The gender is secondary to the attitude. Cats will be “imprinted” with their attitude toward people between three and five weeks. If they are touched, held, talked to, played with while growing up their is a good likelyhood they will be “people” cats.

I’m assuming both are sterilized. If so IMHO it really doesn’t matter. I have five at the moment, three are mine and two are fosters, all Ragdolls. One of the fosters, a Blue Point who I nicknamed “Satan” because of the look on his face when he first came and his, well, less then friendly attitude, thought he ruled the roost, however after he came here Mr. Blue, also a Blue Point, 5yr old and fully grown (21 lb) put him in his place quickly. Now I’m going to hate to see Satan go, his is such a great cat.

I had a DSH who I lost six weeks prior to her 20th Bday, broke my heart. I think you will however find out two cats are half as much trouble as one. Sometimes they become wrapped up in each other to the point of becoming less attentive to humans, but not always.

Good Luck,

David
